The Edfor Grand Sport: Portugal’s Automotive Gem
The Ferreirinha Legacy

Portugal, a land renowned for its stunning coastlines, rich history, and vibrant culture, also holds a remarkable yet often overlooked chapter in the automotive world—the story of the Edfor Grand Sport. This tale begins with the pioneering spirit of Benedicto Ferreirinha and reaches its zenith with the innovative brilliance of his sons, Eduardo and Jorge Ferreirinha.

The Visionary Pioneer: Benedicto Ferreirinha

In the early 20th century, Benedicto Ferreirinha was a trailblazer in the Portuguese automotive industry. Known for driving the first cars into the city of Porto, Benedicto was more than just a driver; he was a dreamer and a doer. His attempt to build Portugal’s first car in the early 1900s, humorously nicknamed “Iron Bed,” laid the groundwork for future automotive endeavors. Benedicto’s pioneering spirit earned him a place of honor in the periodical Guiauto Ilustrado, celebrating his innovative contributions.

The Ferreirinha Brothers: Eduardo and Jorge

Following in their father’s footsteps, Eduardo and Jorge Ferreirinha immersed themselves in the world of automobile mechanics. By the 1930s, they had transformed their workshop into a hub of innovation in Porto. Their dedication and expertise culminated in the creation of the Edfor brand, a name derived from “Ed” for Eduardo and “for” for Ford.

Birth of a Legend: The Edfor Grand Sport

In 1937, the Ferreirinha brothers unveiled their masterpiece—the Edfor Grand Sport. This stunning two-seater roadster was a blend of sleek design and cutting-edge technology. Powered by a modified Ford V8 engine, the Grand Sport boasted 90 horsepower and could reach a top speed of 160 km/h. Its lightweight aluminum body, aerodynamic fenders, and advanced suspension system made it a formidable competitor on the racing circuit.

The car’s public debut took place at the IX Salão Automóvel do Porto in April 1937, where it immediately captured the attention of automotive enthusiasts and the press alike. The Edfor Grand Sport was not just a car; it was a statement of Portuguese ingenuity and craftsmanship.

Racing Glory and World War II

The Edfor Grand Sport quickly made its mark on the racing world. Eduardo Ferreirinha and other drivers achieved impressive placements in races such as the 1937 Estoril International Circuit and the 1938 Gávea Circuit in Rio de Janeiro, where the car secured a first and third place, respectively.

However, just as the Ferreirinha brothers were poised to revolutionize the automotive industry, World War II brought their dreams to a halt. The war’s onset meant that only four Edfor Grand Sports were ever built, with just two surviving to this day. The conflict disrupted production and shifted priorities, leaving the Edfor project incomplete.

The Legacy Lives On

Despite the challenges and the passage of time, the legacy of the Edfor Grand Sport endures. One of the surviving models resides in Germany, lovingly restored and cherished by a collector who recognized its historical significance. The other remains with the Ferreirinha family, a proud testament to the ingenuity and passion that defined the Edfor brand.

In 2006, filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira brought renewed attention to the Edfor Grand Sport at the Autoclássico event in Porto, where his 1938 film “Já Se Fabricam Automóveis em Portugal” was showcased. This film, lost for decades, featured footage of the factory and the Edfor cars, reigniting interest in this remarkable chapter of Portuguese automotive history.

The Edfor Grand Sport is more than just a car; it’s a symbol of Portugal’s rich heritage and the enduring spirit of innovation. It reminds us that even in the face of adversity, the drive to create and innovate can lead to extraordinary achievements.
