The capital of the district is the city of Viseu, which is located on the Vouga River, 180 kilometers (112 mi) northeast of Lisbon. The city has a population of around 100,000 people.

The district is mostly mountainous, with the highest peak being the Serra da Estrela, which reaches 1,993 meters (6,539 ft) above sea level.
