The Porto district is located in the Norte region of Portugal. It is bordered by the districts of Braga to the north, Vila Real to the east, and Viseu to the south. The district has a total area of 2,395 square kilometers (925 sq mi) and a population of 1,817,172 people. The capital of the district is the city of Porto, which is also the second-largest city in Portugal. The city is located on the Douro River estuary, 290 kilometers (180 mi) north of Lisbon.
The district is mostly mountainous, with the highest peak being the Serra do Marão, which reaches 1,415 meters (4,640 ft) above sea level. The district also has a number of rivers, including the Douro, the Tâmega, and the Vouga. The climate in the district is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters.
