The district has a total area of 3,506 square kilometers (1,355 sq mi) and a population of 458,605 people. The capital of the district is the city of Leiria, which has a population of 128,640 people. The other major cities in the district include Marinha Grande, Alcobaça, and Pombal.
The district is mostly mountainous, with the highest peak being the Serra de Leiria, which reaches 1,340 meters (4,396 ft) above sea level. The district also has a number of rivers, including the Lis, the Lena, and the Raia. The climate in the district is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters.
