Rediscovering Myself in the Charm of Figueira da Foz

Ocean Beach near Buarcos town

by Sofia Pereira

Embarking from Braga, my journey led me to the enchanting town of Figueira da Foz, a hidden gem on the Portuguese Atlantic coast. Known not just for its expansive sandy beaches but also for its unique blend of natural beauty and urban charm, Figueira da Foz held promises of discovery and serenity.

As I strolled along the Praia da Claridade, the beach’s expansive stretch of golden sand was mesmerizing. This beach, famous for being one of the widest urban beaches in Europe, offered a sense of vastness that invited introspection and awe.

A visit to the iconic Santa Catarina Fort, standing guard at the beach’s edge, was a step back in time. This historical fortification, blending with the seascape, reminded me of Portugal’s rich maritime history and Figueira da Foz’s role in it.

The Mercado Municipal da Figueira da Foz was a feast for the senses. The vibrant colors and aromas of fresh produce and local delicacies, like the renowned “Figueira’s sweets” or “Doces da Figueira,” highlighted the town’s culinary heritage.

As the day unfolded, I found myself at the Serra da Boa Viagem, a lush green hill offering panoramic views of the town and the ocean. The tranquility of this place, coupled with the breathtaking scenery, was a moment of pure bliss.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of fiery orange and calming blues, I sat by the iconic Clock Tower at the marina. The rhythmic lapping of the waves against the boats and the distant chatter of the town provided a soothing backdrop to my reflective thoughts.

Returning to Braga, I carried with me more than just memories of Figueira da Foz’s stunning beach and charming town. I brought back a piece of its soul, a serene blend of history, nature, and culture that had subtly reshaped my perspective.
