The festival began in the 18th century, and has grown in popularity over the years. Today, it is a major event in the city of Aveiro, and attracts visitors from all over Portugal. It celebrates the life and miracles of São Gonçalinho, a popular saint who is said to be a miracle worker, especially for couples who are having trouble conceiving. The festival takes place in January, and the main event is the throwing of cavacas, a type of sweet bread, from the top of the Capela de São Gonçalinho.
