The Guarda district is located in the Trás-os-Montes region of Portugal. It is bordered by the districts of Vila Real to the north, Viseu to the south, and Salamanca (Spain) to the east. The district has a total area of 7,044 square kilometers (2,717 sq mi) and a population of 140,191 people. The capital of the district is the city of Guarda, which has a population of around 35,000 people. The other major cities in the district include Miranda do Douro, Macedo de Cavaleiros, and Vinhais.
The district is mostly mountainous, with the highest peak being the Serra da Estrela, which reaches 1,993 meters (6,539 ft) above sea level. The district also has a number of rivers, including the Zêzere, the Douro, and the Côa. The climate in the district is continental, with cold winters and hot summers.
