Golf Courses in Porto

Porto is home to one of the oldest golf courses in continental Europe, the Oporto Golf Club established in 1890. The Skeffington Cup, which since 1891 has been played annually in the club, is the oldest competition in the sport to have been played without interruption.

The club was founded by a group of the old British resident families trading in port wine and finding themselves in need of some active diversion from business or family.

Travelling out of town, Amarante golf course was voted Club of the Year 2001 by the Portuguese Golf Federation.

Despite being a hilly course rising 600 metres above sea level, most of Amarante's 18 holes offer a gentle game, because the architect, Jorge Santana da Silva has been able to limit the climbs to a minimum. The local scenery is most attractive with beautiful hills and vine planted terraced slopes on the River Tâmega.

Montebelo golf course takes advantage of the mountainous terrain of this region, to create a hilly course with good views of the local mountain ranges of Serra do Caramulo and Serra da Estrela.

Axis Golfe Ponte de Lima course is also located inland, sheltered from the strong winds of the Atlantic ocean. Most players will find this course challenging but providing lots of natural pleasure. Designed in two nine-hole series this allows the opportunity for a player to enjoy two different ways of playing each hole
